Whibley Memorial Primary School in Niutao is set for a major upgrade to its Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities under a new partnership between Fonopule Niutao (hereinafter referred to as ‘Kaupule Niutao’) and Global Affairs Canada.
The Contribution Agreement, signed on 28 July 2026 by the Kaupule Niutao, provides CAD 54,000 to improve toilets, bathrooms, handwashing stations, and lighting, while also strengthening school safety and hygiene practices through the development of its first ever WASH and Safety Management Plan.
The project runs until February 2027, benefiting more than 200 students and staff. Activities include training sessions on hygiene, child protection, and gender equality, plus the creation of a student‑led hygiene group and a community committee to maintain facilities.
By February 2027, Whibley Memorial Primary aims to offer a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive environment, especially supporting girls’ attendance and dignity in education, helping Niutao’s children learn and thrive in a healthy school setting.
