The Kaupule o Niutao has received USD 1.5 million from the Italy–Pacific SIDS Cooperation Programme to implement the Rural Electrification Rooftop Solar Backup Project, marking a major milestone for energy security on the island.
The funding, confirmed in December 2025, will support the installation of rooftop solar backup systems for all 180 households including community grouping halls, 7 community buildings including the Island Clinic, Primary School, Community meeting hall etc and 5 households that are not connected to the grid. The system will provide reliable electricity during outages and reduce dependence on costly diesel generation.
According to the project proposal and feasibility study, the initiative is expected to cut diesel use by 17,500 litres per year, save the Government of Tuvalu approximately AUD 35,000 annually in fuel subsidies, and reduce emissions by 151 tonnes of CO₂ each year. The project also strengthens local capacity through technical training for Kaupule staff and collaboration with the Tuvalu Electricity Corporation.
This investment aligns with Tuvalu’s national target of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2030 and supports the Niutao Island Strategic Plan’s commitment to affordable, reliable, and sustainable power for all residents.
